As of September 2024, Bandai Namco confirmed that Elden Ring has sold 28.6 million copies worldwide. The 2024 release of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC undoubtedly contributed to this impressive milestone.
Comparatively, the Dark Souls series, including all three titles, sold 27 million copies prior to Elden Ring’s launch. While some fans speculated that Elden Ring had already surpassed Dark Souls’ total sales, updated numbers revealed otherwise. The Dark Souls franchise has now climbed to 37 million copies sold, keeping it ahead—for now.
With Elden Ring heavily discounted during Black Friday 2024, it’s likely the gap has narrowed further. Updated sales figures from Bandai Namco are awaited, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Elden Ring closes in even more on Dark Souls’ total soon.

Despite the overwhelming success of Elden Ring, FromSoftware appears in no rush to develop a direct sequel. Instead, the studio is branching out with the newly announced Elden Ring: Nightreign, a co-op-focused game set to launch in 2025.
While Nightreign won’t feature cross-play, players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S will get a chance to participate in a playtest early next year.
